Located on the island of Oahu, this park that was formerly called Kahana Valley State Park, recalls the islands' ecosystems before the arrival of Western explorers.
This scenic 5,200-acre wildland offers moderate-to-difficult hiking through dense rain forest. The Nakoa Trail, which leads through the forest, is 3.5 miles). A second one-mile loop trail (Kapa'ele'ele Trail) offers panoramic views of Kahana Bay.
Activities include fishing, canoeing, picnicking in a coconut grove and viewing the park's many historic sites.
For the kind of experience many mainlanders associate with Hawaii, the beach end of the park offers campsites, and the opportunity to swim and body-surf.
Pig hunting is allowed in a public hunting area on weekends and holidays only. Permits are required for camping and hunting.
The park entrance is at 52-222 Kamehameha Hwy. in Kahana.
