Skidaway Island State Park preserves an "inland island," a patch of higher ground completely surrounded by marsh and other wetlands.
It offers residents of busy Savannah a chance to enjoy nature within a half-hour drive.
The 588-acre park has a mile-long nature trail, including a boardwalk, through marshlands and a three-mile wooded trail. Wildlife includes a variety of waterfowl.
There are 87 developed campsites, as well as primitive camping areas off the longer trail for organized groups.
The park borders Skidaway Narrows, a part of the intercoastal waterway, and provides scenic camping and picnicking areas. Two nature trails wind through marshes, live oaks, cabbage-palmettos and longleaf pines, allowing visitors to watch for deer, raccoon, shore birds and rare migrating birds such as the painted bunting.
Observation towers provide another chance for visitors to search for wildlife on this beautiful island. Most facilities are accessible to all.
