Considered one of Georgia's seven wonders, Providence Canyon is also called the state's "Little Grand Canyon." Streams have carved away iron-rich sand and clay to create a jagged terrain painted in stunning reds and ochres.
If Providence Canyon Conservation Park is a photographer's dream, it's also one for the naturalists. The 1,108-acre park has three miles of short hiking trails plus one seven-mile backcountry trail. Trails lead along the top of the canyon, into the canyon, and through surrounding forest.
The backcountry route has six reservable primitive campsites.
Other activities at the park include picnicking. Park staff report the birdwatching at the picnic sites surpasses that in the canyon itself. There is also an interpretive center, and near the park entrance is an 1859 Methodist church, which is the canyon's namesake.
Eight miles away in the town of Omaha, Florence Marina State Park is a good base for a family vacation that includes a visit to Providence Canyon.
Florence offers a wide range of camping and water recreation opportunities. Call 229-838-6870 for more information.
