Established in 1975, Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge in South Carolina contains Pinckney Island, Corn Island, Big and Little Harry islands, Buzzard Island and numerous small islets.
The 4,053-acre refuge, administered by the Savannah Coastal Refuge office in Savannah, has salt marshes, forests, savanna, fallow fields and freshwater ponds.
More than 14 miles of nature trails are available for hiking, bicycling, photography and wildlife observation.
No motorized vehicles are allowed beyond the refuge's parking lot.
Some of the resident species found on Pinckney Island include night herons, white ibis, oystercatchers, little blue herons, alligators and white-tailed deer.
