Wolf Island National Wildlife Refuge

The Wolf Island refuge, which includes Egg and Little Egg islands, protects a long narrow strip of oceanfront beach backed by a broad salt marsh.

It was created in 1930 to preserve the migratory bird sanctuary. In 1999, the refuge was inducted into the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network.

More than 75 percent of the refuge's 5,126 acres are saltwater marsh interlaced with tidal creeks.

All upland areas, including the beaches, are closed to visitors. Visitors must make their own arrangements to reach the refuge by boat.

Many visitors find transportation to the refuge from marinas in Darien, Ga.
