Blackbeard Island, situated about 40 miles south of the Georgia-South Carolina border in McIntosh County, was acquired by the Navy at an auction in 1800 as a source of oak timber for shipbuilding.
The island was a reputed favorite of the infamous pirate Blackbeard.
Today the refuge's 5,618 acres include maritime forest, salt marsh, freshwater marsh and beach habitat. In 1975, 3,000 acres of the refuge were set aside as national wilderness.
Birdwatching is excellent year-round and the trails and roads provide hikers with scenic paths for nature study. There are shorebirds, wading birds, song birds, raptors, deer and alligators.
The island is only accessible by boat and vessels must be moored in the channel. A row boat can then be used to reach the island.
The island is only open to the public during daylight hours.
