Banks Lake, two miles west of Lakeland, is a 4,059-acre refuge that preserves Georgia's largest example of a pocosin or Carolina bay.
Access to the refuge is primarily by boat, and fishing is the most popular activity. Common species include chain pickerel, bluegill, largemouth bass, lake chub sucker, gar, warmouth, crappie and bowfin.
The boat ramp is located off state Hwy. 122, west of Lakeland. A wheelchair-accessible fishing pier is available.
Wildlife sightings at the refuge include osprey, black and turkey vultures, ocassional sightings of bald
eagles and American kestrel. The refuge provides excellent habitat for wood ducks.
Migratory sandhill cranes winter at the refuge. Shallow water areas attract white ibis, egrets, herons and other marsh and wading birds.
The refuge has a short walking trail.
