Cape Henlopen's strategic location at the mouth of the Delaware Bay contributed to its importance in local shipping and military history.
Today, the 6,000-acre park encompasses bays, beaches, wildlife areas, dunes, hiking trails, World War II-era bunkers and the Seaside Nature Center, which offers educational and recreational activities year-round.
Hiking trails weave throughout the dunes and primitive and developed campsites are available. Surf fishing is popular along the park's beaches.
The park offers wheelchair-accessible hiking trailing, and campsites with compact surfaces.
Horses are permitted along the beach from November through March.
