May-September. Entry Fee Charged

This island in the Connecticut River, across from the town of Deep River, is the site of an abandoned cobblestone quarry. While foundations and other traces of the quarry remain, the island is now inhabited only by wildlife.

There are four primitive campsites on the island. Stays are limited to one night. Camping is by fee and permit, obtainable from Gillette Castle State Park after Jan. 14 and two weeks in advance of an intended visit. Gillette Castle and Hurd state parks also accommodate canoe campers, likewise by fee and permit.

The 500-acre island is a virtual wilderness. There is no water supply, electricity or telephone. The island is accessible only by private boat.

About five miles of hiking trails weave through the island. Wildlife viewing is good for deer and wild turkeys. Waterfowl are found on the marshlands on the Selden Cove side of the river, opposite Deep River.
