Hurd State Park sits on the high eastern banks of the Connecticut River 20 miles upstream from Long Island Sound. Primarily a day-use area for hikers, picnickers and anglers, this former golf course has wooded hills and meadows that extend to the river.
The only camping allowed at Hurd is done by paddlers on the Connecticut. Hurd's single canoe/kayak campsite is available for one night only, by fee and advance permit. A permit is obtainable from Gillette Castle State Park after Jan. 14 and two weeks prior to the intended visit.
Gillette Castle and Selden Neck state parks also accommodate canoe campers, who likewise must secure a permit.
About five miles of trails, most being former roads, run through the park. Hikers and cross-country skiers use the trails, as do orienteering enthusiasts.
Hurd is a popular viewing spot for wild turkeys. Deer, ospreys and wintering bald eagles also inhabit the park.
The park is located off state Hwy. 151 in East Hampton.
