Situated in the town of Sharon, amid the beautiful Litchfield Hills of northwestern Connecticut, Housatonic Meadows State Park is a favorite with fly fishermen and campers.
The former try for trout and bass in the clear, cold waters of the Housatonic River. More than three miles of the river shore, including the park's shore, are limited to fly fishing.
Campers appreciate 97 campsites shaded by tall pines and separated by stone walls. Many campsites are near the river. Camping reservations are by mail or phone (877-668-2267). Warm showers, flush toilets and a trailer dump station are provided.
Pets and alcoholic beverages are prohibited in the campground.
Hikers use the three-mile Pine Knob Trail, which leads to scenic vistas over the river and links to the Appalachian Trail.
Though hunting is not permitted in Connecticut state parks, hunters may use nearby state forests.
Also operated by Connecticut State Parks is Kent Falls, a day-use area seven miles south of Housatonic Meadows on Route 7. The dramatic falls can be reached by a wheelchair-accessible trail. No entry fee is charged on weekdays.
