A well-kept secret in southern New England, 2,300-acre Macedonia Brook is Connecticut's largest state park.
The park is also one of the more dramatic, comprising a deep valley with Macedonia Brook at its center, surrounded by mountains. Cobble and Chase mountains, each reaching 1,200 feet, offer outstanding views of the Catskills and Taconics.
Stocked with trout, the brook is popular with anglers until midsummer, when water levels drop.
History buffs can view the foundation of a 19th-century iron furnace.
But this is primarily a campers' and hikers' park, with 51 campsites available from April through September and 15 miles of easy-to-moderate trails.
No pets or alcoholic beverages are permitted in the campground.
Among the park's natural inhabitants are bears, bobcats, turkeys and red-tailed hawks that can be seen riding Cobble Mountain's thermal updrafts.
Also operated by Connecticut State Parks is Kent Falls, a gem of a day-use area nine miles from Macedonia Brook, on Route 7. The dramatic 70-foot falls can be reached by a foot trail. The base of the cascades and falls can be reached by a weelchair-accessible trail.
