The 35,000-acre Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1938 as a winter haven for large concentrations of geese and ducks.

Many other species of wildlife including deer, small mammals, songbirds and wading birds make their seasonal or year-round home here.

An estimated 600,000 people visit the refuge annually to enjoy fishing, hunting, wildlife observation, wildlife photography, special events and other educational and recreational activities.

A visitor center and unique wildlife observation building provide information, exhibits and a chance to view wildlife in a natural setting. Four hiking trails and six boat launch areas are available.

The visitor center is located off Hwy. 67, 2.5 miles west of I-65 at exit 334, and is the best place to begin your visit.

The center is open daily from October to February and Tuesday through Saturday from March to September.
