The caverns at Rickwood Caverns State Park extend for a mile underground.
Although the park is open year-round, the caverns themselves are open from March through October. Tours reveal colorful 260 million-year-old limestone formations and 60-foot-deep pools populated with transparent blind fish and amphibians.
The tours, which take up to an hour, are scheduled on weekends during spring and fall and daily in summer.
Aboveground attractions at the 380-acre park range from an Olympic-size swimming pool open in the summer to three miles of hiking trails through the rugged, wooded terrain.
Birdwatchers keep their eyes peeled for bluebirds, wood thrushes, mockingbirds and many other species.
The park's 13 campsites are equipped with water and electrical hookups.
