This state park in northern Alabama consists of three separate areas. The Wheeler Dam section on Alabama Hwy. 101 in Town Creek offers vacation cottages, picnic and boat launch facilities and great fishing. There are also tennis and basketball courts and more than four miles of hiking trails.
The elaborate facilities at First Creek, off U.S. Hwy. 72 in Rogersville, include a 75-room resort inn (with convention and banquet facilities), a marina with rental slips, boats and pontoons, and an 18-hole golf course. Call 256-247-5461 for inn reservations.
Modern and primitive camping areas are also available. The park offers a beach, about seven miles of hiking trails and picnic areas with tennis courts, basketball courts, and three large pavilions for rent.
There are 10 riverside cottages adjacent to the golf course.
The Elk River area, on U.S. Hwy 72 west of Athens, features picnic tables, a lodge that sleeps 30, and a boat ramp to enjoy great fishing.
