DeSoto State Park covers more than 3,000 acres along Little River atop Lookout Mountain.
The river, extending more than 35 miles, is one of only a few in the nation that forms and flows on a mountaintop for nearly its entire length.
The river offers some whitewater stretches but quieter spots are perfect for swimming. The park's rugged terrain also holds plenty of appeal for rock climbers.
A resort area offers a lodge, chalets and cabins. Seventy-eight modern campsites are available, as well as primitive camping.
Dense woodlands and seasonal wildflowers appeal to hikers, while scenic highlights include Lookout Mountain and the 100-foot DeSoto Falls.
An entry fee is charged for the day use area only.
